When medicines don’t help, an operation is needed, and two widely used ones are inferior turbinoplasty and submucosal diathermy. The question was which one works better.
গবেষণাটি হয়েছে ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালের নাক-কান-গলা ও হেড-নেক সার্জারি বিভাগে, জুলাই ২০২২ থেকে ডিসেম্বর ২০২৩ পর্যন্ত। নাকের হাড় বাঁকা থাকায় যাঁদের সেপ্টাল সার্জারির সাথে টারবিনেট ছোট করার অপারেশন হয়েছে, এমন ১১৪ জন রোগী এতে ছিলেন; প্রতিটি পদ্ধতিতে ৫৭ জন। অপারেশনের ১ সপ্তাহ, ৩ সপ্তাহ ও ৩ মাস পর তাঁদের ফলো-আপ করা হয়।The study took place in the Department of Otolaryngology and Head–Neck Surgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, from July 2022 to December 2023. It included 114 patients who had septal surgery for a deviated septum together with turbinate reduction, 57 with each method. They were followed up 1 week, 3 weeks and 3 months after the operation.
দুই পদ্ধতিতেই রোগীদের উপকার হয়েছে। তবে শেষ ফলো-আপে টারবিনোপ্লাস্টি করা রোগীদের নাক বন্ধ আর হাঁচি বেশি কমেছে, তাঁদের সন্তুষ্টিও বেশি ছিল। অপারেশনের পর জটিলতা হয়েছে টারবিনোপ্লাস্টিতে ৯.৫% আর ডায়াথার্মিতে ১৫.৩% রোগীর; এই পার্থক্য পরিসংখ্যানগতভাবে উল্লেখযোগ্য নয়। টারবিনোপ্লাস্টি করতে অবশ্য সময় কিছুটা বেশি লাগে, রক্তক্ষরণও সামান্য বেশি হয়।Both operations helped. At the final follow-up, patients who had turbinoplasty had less nasal blockage and less sneezing, and they were more satisfied. Complications after surgery occurred in 9.5% of turbinoplasty patients and 15.3% of diathermy patients, a difference that was not statistically significant. Turbinoplasty takes a little longer, with slightly more bleeding during the operation.

But inferior turbinoplasty gives more predictable results, better preserves the lining of the nose (the mucosa), causes less trouble after the operation and leaves patients more satisfied.
